ChopChop ("we", "our", or "us") operates the ChopChop mobile application. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your personal information when you use our app.
1. Information We Collect
We collect the following types of data:
- Account Information — Name, email address, and password when you create an account. If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive your name and email from those services.
- Financial Information — IBAN (bank account number) if you choose to add it for generating QR payment codes. We do not process payments or access your bank account.
- User Content — Profile photos, group images, and receipt photos you upload. Bug reports you submit through the app.
- Usage Data — Transaction details, group memberships, and split calculations you create within the app.
- Device Information — Device token for push notifications (only with your permission).
2. How We Use Your Data
All data we collect is used solely for app functionality:
- To create and manage your account
- To enable bill splitting, group management, and debt settlement
- To generate QR payment codes from your IBAN
- To send push notifications about group activity (with your permission)
- To provide customer support through bug reports
- To scan receipts using AI-powered text extraction
We do not use your data for advertising, tracking, analytics, or marketing purposes. We do not sell, share, or provide your data to third parties for their own purposes.
3. Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party services to operate the app:
- Supabase — Database and file storage (profile images, group images, bug report attachments). Data is stored on servers within the EU.
- OpenAI — Receipt text extraction. Only the text content of scanned receipts is sent for processing. No personal information is included.
- Apple Push Notification Service (APNs) — Delivery of push notifications to iOS devices.
- Apple Sign In / Google Sign In — Authentication providers. We only receive your name and email; we do not access any other data from these services.
- Open Exchange Rates — Currency conversion rates. No personal data is sent to this service.
We do not integrate any advertising SDKs, analytics trackers, or data brokers.
4. Data Storage and Security
- Your data is stored on secure servers hosted by Supabase (PostgreSQL database) and Render.com (API server).
- Authentication tokens are stored securely in your device's Keychain (iOS).
- All communication between the app and our servers uses HTTPS encryption.
- Passwords are hashed and salted — we never store plaintext passwords.
5. Data Retention
We retain your data for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account:
- Your personal data (name, email, profile image) is permanently removed.
- Your IBAN is deleted.
- Authentication tokens are revoked (including Apple Sign In tokens).
- Transaction history within groups may be retained in anonymized form for other group members' records.
6. Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access your personal data through your profile in the app
- Update your name, email, IBAN, and profile photo at any time
- Delete your account and associated data from Settings in the app
- Withdraw consent for push notifications through your device settings

7. Guest Mode
ChopChop offers a Guest Mode that does not require an account. In Guest Mode:
- No personal data is collected or sent to our servers.
- All split calculations and history are stored locally on your device only.
- Data is deleted when you exit Guest Mode or uninstall the app.
8. Children's Privacy
ChopChop is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated date. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
